Losing weight too fast is it bad ?
In the race to be thin, we sometimes forget that losing more than 5 kilos has consequences on our health. A very important and rapid weight loss can indeed have serious repercussions on the body, which are not necessarily visible from the outside. The point with Doctor Alain Gondinet, nutritionist doctor.
When it comes to dieting, the adage “lose slowly but surely” should be on everyone’s mind.
Losing weight too fast is it bad ? What to know
The phenomenon of oxidative stress
Each change in diet or lifestyle creates stress that destabilizes the body. But in periods of strict dieting, it is towards a real auto-intoxication that we can go if the nutritional contributions are badly adapted. “A strong oxidative stress is responsible for a discharge of free radicals in each cell of the body. An additional intake of antioxidants as well as a rebalancing of proteins/fats/sugars then quickly becomes necessary. Especially if the patients who deprive themselves are not medically monitored and make bad choices to lose weight quickly” explains Dr. Gondinet.
This oxidation of the cells is harmful. It creates a premature aging of the epidermis, but also leads to an imbalance of the intestinal flora as well as a multitude of exchanges and functions of the body.
Excessive dieting: beware of damage to the muscle
Ideally, during a low-calorie diet, we try to preserve the muscles and promote the loss of fat mass. But it is important to know that the body will first spontaneously draw from the muscle and then from the fat.
So, in order not to lose too much muscle, it is often recommended to enrich one’s diet with proteins. What is less known is that the type and quality of proteins are essential to preserve muscle mass. “You have to compensate with protein, but for that to work, you have to consume proteins with a high biological value and essential amino acids,” says the doctor. “Without this, patients not only see their muscles melt away, but also their silhouette become more fragile and less toned. And if they do a lot of sports, as is often the case, they also expose themselves to a dangerous disease, sarcopenia”, he warns.
This disease creates a change in muscle tissue and a reduction in the number of muscle fibers resulting in a loss of strength and a major functional impact. The deregulation of protein synthesis is then comparable to the effect of real anorexia or malnutrition on the body.
Solutions to lose weight safely
First of all, you should not put yourself in danger by trying to lose too much weight, too quickly. “The only patients who can serenely lose 30 kilos in one year are those who wear a gastric band and they are followed psychologically and medically. To think that you can lose 10 kilos in one month, as I sometimes hear, is unconsciousness, because to reach your goal, you will inevitably expose yourself to health problems in the more or less long term”, he says.
If you are planning to lose more than 7 or 8 kilos, first consult a nutritionist who will advise you. Then, it is important to choose your food well and to go for those rich in Omega 3, lactobacilli (good for the intestinal flora) and organic products. Not to mention a course of antioxidant food supplements.
